acoustoplasmonic metasurface design with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for dynamic acoustic wavefront shaping

Abstract
Optical and acoustic metasurfaces have been extensively studied for wavefront shaping, including lensing, beam steering, and holography. This work aims to explore a new field of acoustoplasmonic metasurfaces that utilize the photoacoustic effect in gold nanoparticles to generate high-frequency acoustic waves via optical excitation. We leverage the extreme polarization-dependence of absorption efficiency in nanoellipsoids to introduce acoustic wavefront tunability, which opens the door to applications in super-resolution acoustic imaging.

Julia Holland is a third-year PhD student from UC San Diego under Dr. Lisa Poulikakos, majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Materials Science and Solid Mechanics. Julia began her undergraduate studies at Moorpark College before transferring to UC Davis, where she graduated with Honors in 2022 with her Bachelor’s degree. From the spring of 2021 to the summer of 2022, Julia worked as an intern at Teledyne Imaging Sensors where she first developed an interest in photonics. This motivated her to pursue a graduate degree in this field of research. She joined the Poulikakos Lab in September 2022, where she began studying the photoacoustic effect with applications in super-resolution imaging. After earning her Master's degree in 2023, she transitioned to the PhD program where she is excited to continue her research in acoustoplasmonics. Outside of the lab, Julia enjoys oil painting, reading, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
