Operational upgrades for the CFHT Observatory to create and preserve a sustainable future

Abstract

Maunakea continues to be recognized for providing “World Class” Ground-Based observing conditions and CFHT has taken full advantage of this distinction to consistently rank in the “Top-3” worldwide for producing Scientific Publications by its users worldwide. This paper is presented to identify recent “Operational Upgrades” aimed at perpetuating this distinguished designation into the future.

Ivan Look is currently the Operations Manager at CFHT having been in that position for the last 7 years after originally joining the company 15 years earlier as a Mechanical Engineer/Designer. He worked at Lockheed-Martin (3 years) in the Ground Support Equipment division responsible for designing, testing, fabricating, and delivering hardware to test Space Payloads prior to launch from here on Earth. Mr. Look spent 3-years before that employed by the Joint Astronomy Centre (Hilo) developing “Thermal Upgrades” for the United Kingdomʻs Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Prior to UKIRT he worked for 9-years as a Mechanical Engineer at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company (Sunnyvale, CA) designing vacuum chambers and test beds for Weapons Effects Testing.
