This Spotlight was motivated by the growing interest in so-called hybrid solar energy systems, ones which can co-generate electricity and medium-to-high temperature thermal energy simultaneously. In the United States much of the interest was generated by the ARPAE FOCUS funding program which supported many of the projects discussed within, but outside the US significant research is being undertaken in this area particularly in Australia, China, and India. The goal of our book is to inform readers about basic considerations within photovoltaics and solar thermal collectors, including levelized costs, since these form the basis for the hybrid systems. Further discussion is included on spectrum-splitting approaches, selective filtration approaches, optical design, and issues in thermal packaging. Detailed discussion is provided on the role of nanoparticles as spectrally selective absorbers as well.
