Profile Summary

Roberto Pini graduated magna cum laude in Physics in 1983 at the University of Florence, Italy. He is presently a Research Director of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and since 2013 serves as the Director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the CNR in Florence (last renewal up to May 2023).

Since 2000 he is also a contract professor at the University of Florence, Dept. of Physics and Dept. of Medicine and Surgery for university and post-doc courses on Basic Optics, Biomedical Optics, Lasers and Applications.

Since he was appointed as a researcher in 1985 by the CNR at the Institute of Quantum Electronics, he has gained a wide experience in R&D on:
• technology of many types of laser and LED sources;
• theory of laser-materials interactions for biomedical and industrial applications;
• guided propagation in optical waveguides and nonlinear optics for frequency conversion;
• biomedical optics and biophotonics, including advanced microscopy and spectroscopy, optical nanosensors, nanomedicine.

Noticeable applications of these researches were developed for biomedical diagnostics and surgery, treatment of cancer and age-related diseases, laser material processing, artworks conservation, photonics for the aerospace.

He has been the coordinator, as well as the scientific responsible in many research projects (29 in the last 10 years), mainly involving industrial researches on themes of Optics and Photonics.

He is co-author of more than 300 scientific publications, including 5 books. He is also co-author of 22 patents, all of them in application fields of lasers and biomedical optics.
