Shin-Tson Wu: The 2022 SPIE Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award in Photonics
Shin-Tson Wu, a leader in the field of display science and device technology, is currently a Pegasus Professor of Optics & Photonics at the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL) of the University of Central Florida (UCF). Wu's research focuses on three areas: advanced displays including miniLED, microLED, quantum-dot LCD, and augmented reality and virtual reality displays; adaptive optics for laser beam steering and foveated imaging; and adaptive lenses, such as tunable/switchable focus liquid crystal lenses. Prior to joining UCF in 2001, Wu was at Hughes Research Laboratories for nearly 20 years. Across his nearly four decades of work within industry and academia he has obtained 191 patents, producing groundbreaking work in developing new liquid crystal materials, devices, and applications. His prolific inventions, scientific discoveries and technological development of advanced LCDs and photonic devices have had — and continue to make — a tangible impact on the global display and photonic industries.
Elected to Fellow status in 2007, Wu has been active in the Society for nearly two decades, serving on various committees and chairing multiple conferences since 1992, as well as presenting nearly 70 papers at SPIE conferences during that time. He is the recipient of the Society for Information Display's (SID) 2011 Slottow-Owaki Prize, the 2008 SPIE G.G. Stokes Award in Optical Polarization, and Optica's 2014 Esther Hoffman Beller Medal, among others. Also in 2014, he was inducted into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame.
"Across his professional career with industry and academia Professor Wu has produced volumes of work, both fundamental and application-driven, on liquid crystal displays with extensive impact on the display industry," said Bank of East Asia Professor, Institute for Advanced Study, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and University of Rochester Professor Emeritus Ching Tang. "He is a prolific inventor and researcher, a learned scholar, and an engaged mentor, seeding a family tree of scores of postdocs, PhD, and MS students in display technology. I have also had the pleasure of knowing Professor Wu personally for over 20 years through our association with the Society for Information Display. The impact of his many contributions to LCD technology and his outstanding record in mentoring students in display science and technology is apparent across the field."
