Professor Valery V. Tuchin of Saratov State University, Russia, is the recipient of the 2007 SPIE Educator Award in recognition of his unparalleled global contributions to education and dissemination of technical information in the field of biomedical optics and biophotonics, and his pioneering work for SPIE's biomedical optics educational programs.
SPIE President, Professor Brian Culshaw, congratulated Tuchin on his award at the recent European Conference on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) in Munich, Germany.

Since 2003 The SPIE Educator Award has been presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to optics education by an SPIE instructor or an educator in the field. Tuchin has made significant contributions to the international scientific community by designing and teaching biomedical optics courses and organizing schools for junior scientists and students worldwide. During the past decade he has been an instructor for numerous short courses on biomedical optics for international audiences, ranging from PhD students and engineers to private company employees and medical doctors. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and books and has helped organize several SPIE conferences, workshops, and symposia since 1992. He has been instrumental in organizing the SPIE Annual Fall School for Young Scientists and Students on Optics, Laser Physics, and Biophysics in Saratov since 1996.
For his unparalleled global contributions to education and dissemination of technical information in the field of biomedical optics and biophotonics, and his pioneering work for SPIE's biomedical optics educational programs, SPIE is proud to present its 2007 Educator Award to Professor Valery V. Tuchin.
In 2008 Tuchin will serve as a conference chair for BiOS, part of SPIE Photonics West, the world's largest and most prestigious international biomedical optics and imaging conference.
