Masahito Yamanaka, John Canning, 7 others receive Edmund Optics Educational Awards

    21 October 2015

Two SPIE members are among nine optics researchers receiving Edmund Optics (EO) Educational Awards this year.

SPIE Fellow John Canning, a professor at the University of Sydney, Australia, received the Bronze Award of $3,000 in Edmund Optics products for the development of a smartphone spectrometer, according to the EO announcement. The spectrometer utilizes a UV LED that is integrated onto the phone with the use of a collimating lens to act as the source of the fluorimeter.

Canning has published more than 85 papers with SPIE and is the coauthor of several papers at therecent International Conference on Optical Fibre Sensors in Brazil. He was the symposium chair of Asia Pacific Optical Sensors in 2012.

Also receiving an EO award was SPIE Member Masahito Yamanaka, assistant professor of Nagoya University, Japan, who received the Gold Award of $10,000 in EO products. Yamanaka, a former president of the SPIE Student Chapter at Osaka University, won his award for super resolution 3D imaging technology, which uses the high-brightness of rare-earth metals and nanoparticles along with highly nonlinear emissions. Yamanaka's project looks deep inside biological samples with the production of customized high contrast, low S/N fluorescence imaging system.

Yamanaka is a coauthor on a paper about high-resolution optical coherence microscopy to be presented at SPIE/OSJ Biophotonics Japan next week.

The EO Educational Award supports undergraduates and graduates in optics programs in science, technology, engineering at mathematics at nonprofit colleges and universities worldwide. Given in the form of product donations, the EO Awards consisted on $10,000 in products for Gold, $7,500 in products for Silver, $5,000 in products for Bronze and 12 Finalist awards consisting of $500 in products. Judges evaluated over 800 applicants to select 45 global finalists.

EO also announced that SPIE Member Marisa Edmund is the new executive vice president of Global Sales and Marketing. Her expanded role will allow her the opportunity to develop and execute sales strategies in order to sustain the growth of Edmund Optics while managing all components of the company's worldwide marketing and communications program.

Edmund has previously served on the SPIE Board of Directors and the SPIE Corporate and Exhibitor Committee.
