Last month, SPIE President Philip Stahl attended the Industrial Affiliates (IA) fall workshop at the College of Optical Sciences (OSC), University of Arizona.

SPIE participated in the IA showcase and featured resources for the 2015 International Year of Light. Stahl (who earned his masters and doctorate degrees at OSC) and SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs later attended the 50th anniversary banquet in Old Tucson, where Stahl presented Dean Thomas Koch with a commemorative plaque in honor of the anniversary.

Koch and faculty shared light-hearted stories from the college's history book, dataing back to the founding of the Optical Sciences Center -- and a look at the college's exciting opportunities for students with the groundbreaking research now underway.

This fall, the college welcomed a host of new students including 24 first-year Ph.D. students. The total enrollment at the beginning of fall semester is 190 Ph.D., 158 Masters, 15 Certificate, and 85 undergraduate students.

In honor of OSC's 50th anniversary, a series of short, light-hearted articles entitled "Light Moments" recount the exploits and adventures from OSC earliest years.
