Paper Abstract
Digitized transaxial sequential ultrasound images of the prostate are analyzed statistically and a methodology to distinguish malignant from benign prostate lesions is being developed. For a given stepwise planimetrical scan of the prostate, classification criteria for identifying benign and malignant lesions on the basis of the statistical variability measures is presented. Results obtained from applying the statistical variability measure approach to both cancerous (various grades) and non-cancerous (pathologically confirmed) hypoechoic ultrasound lesions of the prostate is described. The accuracy of the present statistical based image analysis to predict pathology from ultrasound images is 87%.
