Coronavirus and Traveling to Yokohama, Japan
SPIE is closely monitoring coronavirus (COVID-19) and following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare.
After seeking feedback from our conference leadership and the Pacifico Yokohama Convention Center, we determined it was unwise to hold the event as originally planned in June. Unfortunately, the scale and configuration of event space required for SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation are unavailable in Japan during December 2020.
Because we heard great interest from the community in personally reconnecting, when safe, to report results, share accomplishments, and discuss ideas face-to-face, we have developed what we believe is a good solution in a complex environment.
SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2020 will be held 13-18 December 2020 in San Diego, California, USA, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. We are confident the facility will provide a safe and welcoming environment for the entire conference and exhibition.
We thank the local organizers in Japan and event planning committee for excellent work, leadership, and professionalism during the past few months. SPIE is working to bring Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation to Japan in a future year.
SPIE will email all participants with further details about new deadlines, travel information, and hotels as they become available.
If you have previously registered for SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2020 and are unable or unwilling to attend in December, SPIE will refund 100% of your registration costs. To request a refund, please email help@spie.org.
However, on behalf of the volunteer conference leadership and SPIE, we hope you will arrange your schedule now to join us in December for the 2020 edition of this outstanding event. We look forward to helping our community share results, discuss possibilities and plans, and reconnect in sunny San Diego on 13 December 2020.
