SPIE Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

SPIE Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Our Mission

SPIE, its volunteers, and staff work to encourage and promote diversity at our events and within our profession. We believe that bringing together people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives will support innovation through a diversity of ideas and solve challenges faced by our world.

We also believe in the development of collaborative environments that value participation from individuals with different ideas and perspectives, that ultimately have a positive impact on the science of light. It is our aim that our programs reflect these core values.

Scientific Meeting Harassment Survey

Cover image

SPIE and OSA joined forces to measure harassment at their events by distributing a professional conduct survey to their combined global membership in December 2018.

The joint report, now available, helps OSA and SPIE measure the scale of harassment at meetings and understand the experiences of people who are discouraged or harmed when it occurs. SPIE and OSA are working together to develop policies and practices that create a more inclusive and welcoming conference experience.

Read the joint press release about the effort. And download the report.

Gender Equity Survey

Cover image

The SPIE Gender Equity Task Force was established in 2015 to identify how the professional environment and culture of the community can better enable equal opportunities, rewards, and recognition for its members, independent of gender.

The task force last year recommended steps that individuals and organizations can take to support those objectives. Those recommendations and other resources are contained in a report, “Gender Equity in the Optics and Photonics Workplace.”

Science is For Everyone Poster

Poster image

In an effort to increase awareness of equity, diversity, and inclusion within optics and photonics and the greater scientific community, SPIE has designed an educational poster defining the differences of these core tenets and to spread the message that science is indeed for everyone.

SPIE Members, engaged constituents, and outreach professionals can request up to five (5) posters shipped at SPIE's cost; a shipping fee will be applied for quantities greater than five (5). Please use this form to submit your poster request.

SPIE posters are available for download, under the Creative Commons Attribution + Noncommercial + No Derivatives license.
