Ruggedized-packaged, high-power mid-wave and long-wave infrared quantum cascade lasers (Conference Presentation) (Invited Paper)

Abstract
We present our latest results on the development of Quantum Cascade Lasers with Watt-level output power in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral regions. Wall-plug efficiencies in excess of 10% and 5% at 1 W output power level at room temperature were demonstrated at wavelengths of 4.0 and 9.0 µm, respectively. A ruggedized packaging which is capable of withstanding environmental conditions including mechanical shocks, vibrations, extreme storage temperature excursions, extreme ambient temperature excursions during operation, and thermal shocks was developed and qualified.

Dr. Richard Maulini received his M.Sc. degree and his Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, in 2002 and 2006, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis focused on the development of broadly tunable mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers for spectroscopic applications. From 2007 to 2013, Dr. Maulini worked as a Senior Scientist at Pranalytica, Inc., in Santa Monica, CA, where he was responsible for the company's tunable laser research and development, and made several key contributions to the development of the company's high-power/high-efficiency QCL line of products. Dr. Maulini joined Alpes Lasers S.A. as development manager in 2013 and became Head of R&D in 2019. His expertise includes tunable quantum cascade lasers, high-power quantum cascade lasers, and applications of quantum cascade lasers. Dr. Maulini authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, which cumulate more than 2900 citations (Hirsch index h = 23), and he holds 8 patents.
