Profile Summary

Prof. Yongmin Liu joined Northeastern University in 2012. Currently he is an associate professor with a joint appointment in the Departments of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering. He received his Ph.D. degree in Applied Science and Technology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2009, and both his M.S. and B.S. degree in Physics from Nanjing University (Nanjing, China) in 2003 and 2000, respectively. He is a Fellow of SPIE and Optica (formerly OSA).

The research of Prof. Liu is at the intersection of optics, engineering, applied physics and nanoscience. It is a synergistic integration of fundamental science, nano material/structure design, artificial intelligence, and prototype device development. Prof. Liu is interested in novel nano optical materials and devices for various applications including next-generation optical information processing, super-resolution imaging, data storage, efficient light harvesting and ultra-sensitive biomedical detection. Prof. Liu has authored and co-authored over 110 journal papers including Science, Nature, Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Physical Review Letters, Nano Letters, and ACS Nano.

Prof. Liu was a recipient of Faculty Fellow of College of Engineering (2019), NSF CAREER Award (2017), Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2016), SPIE DCS Rising Researcher Award (2016), 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award (2016), Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship (2015), and Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad (2009). Currently he serves as an editorial board member for Nano Convergence, PhotoniX, Scientific Reports, and EPJ Applied Metamaterials.
