Prof. Kim joined WPI after serving as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, where he developed adaptive control systems for hazard mitigation of large civil structures. He is also president, CEO, and chief scientist at Advanced Structural Control & Monitoring (ASCM). In his research, Prof. Kim seeks to overcome some of the challenges that have stood in the way of using smart control devices like magnetorheological (MR) dampers within a large structure—including the nonlinear coupling of the structure and the smart dampers. He is addressing this challenge by exploring bio-inspired adaptive controls; sensor fault diagnosis methodology for efficient control of buildings employing smart control devices subjected to a variety of earthquake loadings; and a multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) smart nonlinear control, among other techniques.
