Demonstration of a tunable add-drop filter developed in AIM Photonics process technology

29 January 2025 • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM PST

Abstract

We demonstrate a tunable add-drop developed in AIM Photonics 300 mm process technology. The add-drop filter consists of a 7-µm radius ring waveguide and two straight waveguides with a coupling gap of 150 nm. The filter tuning function is achieved by integrating a doped silicon-based resistive heater. The light is coupled to the filter using grating couplers, which couple input and output light. The 3 dB filter bandwidth of a single resonance is about 0.3 nm and this 3 dB band can be tuned up to 4 nm by applying 20 mW (6 V) of electrical power to the thermal heater.

Presenter

AIM Photonics (United States), SUNY Polytechnic Institute (United States)
Dr. M. Rakib Uddin, currently working as “Research and Development Engineer” for the American Institutions for Manufacturing Photonics (AIM Photonics) at the State University of New York Research Foundation, Albany, New York, USA. AIM Photonics is one of nine Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MIIs) established by the United States Department of Defense. AIM Photonics is working to create a manufacturing and design ecosystem that bridges the current gap between basic research and product development in the emerging photonic integrated circuit (PIC) industry for computing, data communications and sensor applications. From November 2011 until December 2014, he was a researcher for Samsung Electronics. From December 2014 until December 2020, I was an Associate Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Brunei, Brunei Darussalam. Dr. Rakib is author/co-author of more than 120 articles published including seven patents.
