SPIE Promotion Criteria
New criteria in effect for promotion to SPIE Fellow, Senior Member.
New criteria for promotion to the ranks of SPIE Fellow and SPIE Senior Member go into effect this year.
The SPIE Board of Directors voted to implement the new criteria for the two member recognition programs to provide a clear, direct path for progression to these membership distinctions.
The SPIE Senior Member program honors optics and photonics professionals for technical accomplishments and for significant contributions to the educational and organizational efforts of the Society, such as chairing a conference or serving on an SPIE committee, and to the general optics and photonics community.
Senior Member status requires voting membership in SPIE for at least five years, cumulatively. Eligible members may hold regular, life, early careerspecial consideration, or retired membership in the Society.
Nominations for the 2016 class of SPIE Senior Members are due 15 April and should provide evidence of the nominee’s significant technical, entrepreneurial, educational, or management activities as well as service to SPIE and the engineering profession.

The SPIE Fellows program recognizes current SPIE members who have made outstanding technical contributions in the field of optics and photonics and clear and outstanding contributions to SPIE and the international optics and photonics community.
Effective this year, Fellow nominees must also be an SPIE Senior Member when the nomination is submitted.
Nomination materials for the 2017 class of SPIE Fellows must be submitted by 15 September.
They should include the nominee’s publication record, including patents, books, and journal papers; entrepreneurial or technical management contributions to the optics and photonics industry, government programs, or other organizations; and accomplishments in an engineering, research, educational, manufacturing, testing, design, or other capacity.
Support letters for the nominee and a curriculum vitae are also required.
