logo for Corrolation Optics 2015Correlation optics is a dynamically progressing field of modern photonics springing from new interest in the theory of partial coherence and partial polarization as well as the related areas of pure and applied optics.

Eleven biannual international conferences on correlation optics have been held since 1993 in Chernivtsi (Ukraine), with 120-150 presentations from scientists from more than 20 countries. The next International Conference on Correlation Optics will be held 14-18 September 2015 in Chernivtsi.

SPIE is a cosponsor and will publish the proceedings in the SPIE Digital Library after the conference.

Presentations at the conference typically include optical chaos; optical correlation devices based on diffractive optical elements, including optical and digital holography; fractal optics; optical sensors; and optical correlation diagnostics, according to SPIE Fellow and conference chair Oleg V. Angelsky of Chernivtsi National University. Interferometry and microscopy of rough surfaces and random media and new applications of correlation optics in biology and medicine are also session topics.

Angelsky notes that conference attendees have played a vital role in the growth of this field of study.

In the 1990s, for example, researchers at the conference began to pay considerable attention to non-destructive optical correlation diagnostics of slightly rough surfaces (of vital importance for in-dustrial quality control); optical and digital holography, including promising approaches in nonlinear holographic associative memories; and the use of Young's concept of diffraction phenomena in in-formation optics.

Beginning with the new Millennium, Angelsky says, the discussion topics trended toward correlation singular optics (singular optics of vector - inhomogeneously polarized, partially coherent and partially polarized polychromatic optical beams bearing vortices); general problems of interconnection among optical coherence and polarization of light; and optical currents.

Important discussions at the 2013 conference that are expected to be advanced in 2015 deal with promising approaches of quantum cryptography in optical telecommunications, the physics of nanodots, and optical correlation approaches for controlling nanodot growth. Special events for students will also be held.

The call for papers for the 2015 conference was issued in November 2014, with abstracts due by 1 March 2015.
