Stephen Aylward plenary: Trends and Challenges in Open Source Software

Over the past decade, the field of medical image analysis research has undergone a rapid evolution. What was a collection of disconnected efforts burdened by mundane coding and file I/O tasks, is now a collaborative community that has embraced open-source software as a shared foundation, reducing mundane coding and I/O burdens, promoting replicable research, and accelerating the pace of research and product development.

In the plenary talk, "Trends and Challenges in Open Source Software," Stephen Aylward of Kitware (USA) reviews the history and current state of open-source software in medical image analysis research. Stephen R. Aylward is Senior Director of Operations at Kitware, a company conducting applied research and commercial development in medical imaging, computer vision, data management, and scientific visualization. Aylward's research has recently focused on registration in the presence of pathologies and on vascular network characterization.
