Turan Erdogan: Optics group finds synergy with multiple brand identities

Many companies under one roof address markets separately and together.

IDEX Optics & Photonics (IOP) is a platform of companies within IDEX Corp., a $2B publically traded company that serves industrial, safety, health, and science markets with highly engineered products. IOP is comprised of four major brands (CVI Laser Optics, Melles Griot, Advanced Thin Films, and Semrock), with eight major manufacturing sites as well as several distribution and sales office locations around the world. Products include optical components (especially laser optics and optical filters), gas and solid-state lasers, lens and optical assemblies. The company's markets are in life sciences, medical, semiconductor, industrial, and defense applications.

Turan Erdogan is the CTO and VP of Business Development of the IOP platform. He is also the Site Leader of Melles Griot Rochester. Previously he was CTO and co-founder of Semrock, Inc., founded in 2000 and subsequently acquired by IDEX Corp. in 2008. He has over 25 years of experience in the optics industry, has authored or co-authored over 50 scientific publications and more than 50 major conference talks, and holds more than 30 patents or patents pending. Before founding Semrock,  Erdogan was a tenured Associate Professor at The Institute of Optics of the University of Rochester, where he led a research group developing new technologies ranging from optical materials to measurement techniques to optical components. Previously he worked at Bell Laboratories, then part of AT&T. Erdogan holds S.B. degrees in Physics and in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Optics from The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. He is a Fellow and Adolph Lomb Medalist of the Optical Society of America.
