Louay Eldada: LiDAR for Autonomous Vehicles: The future of 3D Sensing and Perception

In this keynote presentation, Louay Eldada, CEO and co-founder of Quanergy, details how solid-state LiDAR technology will revolutionize autonomous vehicles.

Solid-state LiDAR systems are key enabling technology for self-driving vehicles, 3D mapping, and industrial automation. Until recently LiDAR systems were too bulky, expensive, and with too many moving parts. With solid-state technology, Quanergy has been able to miniaturize the device, small enough within a car's front grill. This second-generation device is the size of two decks of cards, with a version with smaller dimensions on the Quanergy roadmap.

Commercial advancements have made sophisticated mapping, object detection, classification, and tracking possible with small sensors that will become ubiquitous, particularly as they enable autonomous vehicles or "self-driving cars". The magnitude of the market opportunity has been recognized by venture capitalists who have poured investment into this area, and recently valued Quanergy at over $1.5 billion-making this field the hottest market in photonics.

Louay Eldada is Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Quanergy, a developer and manufacturer of advanced nanophotonic 3D sensors and sensing systems. He formerly was VP of Technology at Amprius, where he led the R&D and Engineering activities, developing advanced energy storage solutions using rechargeable lithium ion batteries based on silicon nanowire anodes.

Eldada is Associate Editor of the SPIE Journal of Photonics for Energy. He is a senior member in IEEE, OSA, SPIE, AUVSI, MRS and ACS. He published 280 technical papers and books, chaired and organized 160 technical conferences, gave 200 keynote and invited talks, garnered 50 technical awards, and has 64 patents. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering from Columbia University.
