Visualization tool enables safer surgeries
Real-time detection and imaging of hidden blood vessels was the goal of Briteseed's winning entry in the 2015 SPIE Startup Challenge.
Briteseed (Chicago, IL) is a medical diagnostics and imaging company that has developed SafeSnips, a proprietary platform technology that reduces surgical risk by giving clinicians hyper-local visualization within their tools. SafeSnips integrates into existing surgical cutting tools to facilitate the real-time detection and imaging of hidden blood vessels before any cuts are made. Accidental vessel injury is a billion-dollar healthcare problem and Briteseed provides a low-cost, real-time, and unobtrusive technology for vessel detection.
This video interview with Briteseed's Jonathan Gunn, president and cofounder of Briteseed, took place just after Briteseed's SafeSnips was named the winner of the 2015 Startup Challenge at SPIE Photonics West.
Gunn earned doctoral degrees in Biomaterials Engineering and Nanotechnology from the University of Washington and a JD from Northwestern Law. He has published over 15 peer-reviewed articles in the biomedical engineering field and earned his BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego.
