Andrea Armani lab: Whispering gallery mode lasers characterize DNA
Blue lasers for biodetection take advantage of efficient blue absorption of DNA.
Andrea Armani is the Fluor Early Career Chair and Associate Professor in the Mork Family Dept of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Southern California (USC).
The Armani Research Lab combines innovations in nanomaterials and in integrated photonics to advance disease diagnostics and therapeutics. The group includes researchers with diverse academic and research backgrounds, and there are numerous ongoing collaborations with the medical school.
In 2015, as part of the International Year of Light, the Armani Lab was a key participant in organizing the first "Lasers 4 Ladies" event at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The event is aimed at 5th through 12th-grade girls, and includes activities on virtual reality, lasers, solar cells and optical fiber. Besides USC students and faculty, participants from the photonics industry around the Los Angeles area also participate.
Armani serves on the program committee for the annual Laser Resonators, Microresonators, and Beam Control conference at SPIE Photonics West, and has authored or coauthored more than 40 publications in SPIE Proceedings. She is a Senior Member of SPIE.
