I have always found imaging physics fascinating and feel fortunate that I have lived at a time that enabled me not only to witness but to experience first-hand some amazing developments in imaging science. Translating those developments into clinical practice has been extremely rewarding.

The majority of my current responsibilities are related to overseeing an MRI-based prostate cancer clinical trial. Our unique capabilities and team skills have enabled us to use a trans-rectal approach to deliver laser interstitial thermal therapy to prostate cancer using thermal mapping with MRI. Using light as an energy source is not a new concept, but this novel planning and delivery mechanism is, so we established the first clinical trial using this approach.

Early on in my career, I juggled motherhood, school and work as many women do. On occasion I doubted my capabilities, but staying the course over the years has proven fruitful. It can be done!

When I was first starting out in my career it would have been helpful to connect with more women in research leadership roles to learn, network, and encourage one another. A good mentor makes a huge difference! My advice to young women: Be patient. Sometimes it's impossible NOT to feel discouraged, but stay strong and believe in yourself. Use fear as fuel for action.

Barriers to success can be overcome if we apply logic, sensibility and patience to just about any situation. Additionally, it helps to identify an expert in your field who is willing to team up with you to help you realize your full potential and contribute in meaningful ways to STEM fields.
