Starting in 2005, SPIE has produced the Women in Optics planner highlighting women in the fields of science and engineering. This planner includes photos and interesting facts about women who are making a difference through their work and other contributions to the fields of science, optics, and engineering. Five thousand copies of the planner are printed and distributed, free of charge, in more than 25 countries worldwide annually.
While this planner still achieves the original goal of supporting and promoting the work of female scientists, it has grown to be a tool for introducing girls and young women to the possibilities of careers in all sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each year, the increasing demand for this planner has demonstrated that there is great interest in learning about women in the sciences and the need for female role models in technical fields.
