Jürgen Popp studied chemistry at the universities of Erlangen and Würzburg. After his PhD in Chemistry he joined Yale University for postdoctoral work. He subsequently returned to Würzburg University where he finished his habilitation in 2002. Since 2002 he holds a chair for Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. Since 2006 he is also the scientific director of the Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena. His research interests are concerned with bio- and material-photonics. In particular his expertise is in the field of Raman spectroscopy and in the development of innovative Raman techniques should be emphasized. The scientific results of J. Popp were published in more than 250 scientific articles in premier peer-reviewed journals. Jürgen Popp coordinates the European Network of Excellence "Photonics4Life" and is Editor-in-Chief of "Journal of Biophotonics". Since 2009 he is Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Lecture Title(s)

Raman meets Medicine - Raman spectroscopy a powerful tool in Biophotonics: In this lecture a report on the application and development of various linear and non-linear Raman spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of a broad variety of biological probes will be given. Raman spectroscopy is an extremely capable, suitable and prominent method for probing the relationship between structure, dynamics and function of biomolecules. Over all it will be shown that Raman spectroscopy and its various techniques (micro-Raman, resonance Raman, SERS, TERS, CARS etc.) provide a powerful tool for noninvasive, nondestructive, and water-insensitive investigation of all kind of biological probes like single cells, tissues etc.

Nonlinear Microspctroscopy for Biomedical Applications: We will present modern trends in nonlinear microscopy spanning a multitude of different technologies from e.g. multi-photon fluorescence microscopy towards label free methods e.g. generation of second harmonic as well as nonlinear Raman microscopy (CARS). The presented examples will show how nonlinear microscopy methods have been successfully applied for the investigation of complex biological samples and revolutionized many areas of life science research in particular biomedical research.
