Stanford Chapter Hosts Inaugural Retreat to Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration

By Meredith Lee

The Stanford University OSA/SPIE Student Chapter and the Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC) recently held the first Stanford University Photonics Retreat (SUPR) April 3-5, 2009 in Monterey, CA. Over 60 enthusiastic attendees met for a weekend filled with technical seminars, poster sessions, career-building workshops, a lively alumni panel, and special events, including a Keynote Address by Professor Joseph W. Goodman and an "Evening With the Sky" astronomy lecture and celestial viewing with Professor Robert L. Byer.

SPRC Executive Director Thomas M. Baer notes, "Students and faculty presented their research during several very energetic poster and oral sessions, covering topics including biophotonics, telecommunications, quantum information processing, solar energy, and MEMS, to name just a few. The quality of the talks, the superb venue, and the excellent organization by the students resulted in all of the attendees asking about a sequel next year." The Stanford OSA/SPIE Student Chapter has started to recruit a Retreat Committee for SUPR 2010 and looks forward to making the retreat an annual tradition to build a more cohesive optics community.
