In May 2024, SPIE awarded $303,000 in scholarships to 72 outstanding SPIE Student Members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated, selected, and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee.
SPIE has cumulatively distributed more than $7.5 million in individual scholarships since the program began in 1978. This ambitious effort reflects the Society's commitment to empowering the next generation of scientists, engineers, and visionaries who will shape the future of technology and research. By providing financial support and resources, these scholarships open doors for successful and impactful careers in optics and photonics. Individual awards range from $3,000 to $11,000.
Brian Primeau, the 2024 SPIE Scholarship Committee chair, noted, “Congratulations to the SPIE 2024 scholarship winners! These students have all demonstrated their potential to make long-term contributions to the optics and photonics community, and the Scholarship Committee was thoroughly impressed with the students' accomplishments. The committee members and I look forward to seeing what this class of students brings to the world as they begin or continue their careers in optics and photonics.”
Primeau also expressed his gratitude: “Thank you to all the applicants for taking the time to apply, and thank you to all the recommenders who took time to write insightful letters. Finally, thanks to the committee volunteers and SPIE staff for their time in reviewing all the applications!”
