In 2021, SPIE awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 78 outstanding individuals for their potential long-range contribution to optics, photonics, or other related fields. Individual scholarships typically range from $3,000 to $11,000.

SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarships are open to students located anywhere in the world who are studying optics, photonics, or related fields.

  • You must be a Student Member of SPIE. The standard Student Membership fee is $20.

  • High school, pre-university, and secondary school students can receive a one-year complimentary Student Membership. Fill in the Pre-College Membership Application Form and email to scholarships@spie.org.

  • You must be enrolled in an optics, photonics, or other related program (e.g., physics, electrical engineering, photonics technician) for the entire school year beginning in fall 2022. Applicants who have received a terminal degree such as MD, JD, PhD, etc. are not eligible to apply.
