SPIE Student News From Optics & Photonics

Welcome New SPIE Student Chapters!
Six new student chapters were approved at the conference in mid-August. These new chapters join the steadily increasing population of optics students in Russia, China, and the United States.

Student Chapter Leadership Workshop
The 5th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop included an all-time high of 109 students from 57 student chapters.

Chapter Booths and Posters
Optics & Photonics 2006 brought 27 student chapters from nearly 10 countries. Chapters set up booths and posters alongside established exhibitors showcasing their activities and achievements.

Early Career Professionals
New this year were events designed for recent graduates in the formative years of their careers.

Recent job market trends have stressed both academic achievement and strong extra-curricular involvement. Applying for a job involves not only a simple résumé/CV and cover letter, but also strong interpersonal skills and extra-curricular involvement as unwritten requirements for getting an interview.

Alexander Goetz Instrument Support Program
Analytical Spectral Devices, Inc. (ASD) announces the creation of the Alexander Goetz Instrument Support Program for North American Researchers.

Fibre Optics, Fibre Lasers and Sensors Winter College
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics will host its Winter College on Fiber Optics, Fiber Lasers and Sensors over two weeks in February 2007. Current plans include a week-long preparatory school and experimental/demonstration sessions at the Laser Lab. The Center's mission is to foster advanced studies and research, especially in developing countries.
