SPIE Scholarships and Grants Applications Now Available
The application deadline for SPIE Scholarships and Grants in Optical Science and Engineering is 7 January 2005. New, writable application forms are available and may be submitted electronically. A 10-page limit has been established for application materials.


Winter College on Optics and Photonics Deadline Nears
The Winter College on Optics and Photonics in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, which will be 7-18 February 2005 in Trieste, Italy, is soliciting applications. The deadline for applications is 15 October.


NPSC Now Accepting Applications
The National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) is now accepting applications. NPSC has changed its approach and now offers three programs. The deadline for applications is 5 November.


Young Scientists Conference Planned for Kiev
The Fifth International Young Scientists Conference, Problems of Optics and High Technology Material Science (SPO 2004), will take place 28-31 October in Kiev, Ukraine. Organized by the SPIE Student Chapter at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, the conference honors the university's 170th anniversary and the 65th anniversary of the Physics Department and Optics Division. SPO 2004 will be held at the university's Department of Physics.


New Student Chapters
Two new Student Chapters were approved by the Board of Directors at the SPIE Annual Meeting in August. The University of Latvia in Riga, with Professor Janis Spigulis serving as the Faculty Advisor, and West Mesa High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with Carmen DiGregorio serving as the Faculty Advisor.


Student Chapter Meeting a Success in Denver

SPIE Student Chapter leaders met for a day of leadership orientation at the SPIE 49th Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, this August. A record 64 students attended the orientation representing 11 countries: Argentina, Canada, China, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, UK, and the United States.


The day was full of information about SPIE, Student Chapters, and life after graduation. The students heard Dale Gaddy of Association Team Inc. (Fairfax, VA) talk on "Building a Strong Student Chapter." The morning workshop was geared toward helping students develop a plan of action to organize and launch into the next school year.

Student Activities at Optics East
Students, join your mentors and peers at Optics East. These events will provide opportunities to learn the new, refresh the old, and sharpen your edge. A schedule of events is available on spie.org, visit often as more information is posted daily.


Nobel Laureate Townes Lunches with Students
Eighty-nine-year-old Charles Townes provided advice and memories for more than 60 students at the luncheon during the Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation meeting last June in Glasgow, UK.


Share Your Tricks...and Win
Some of the most useful and ingenious scientific techniques are never documented. Share the unconventional engineering you've put to work in the lab and enter your trick to win up to $1500. The best entries will be published in Tips and Tricks, due out in August 2005.

The Student Chapter Listserv is a great way to connect with your peers all over the world. Join now - when you reach the sign-up page, please enter your name and membership number in the comments field so that your status in a Chapter can be verified.


Digital Library Student Chapter Rate
The special annual subscription for Student Chapters is the same as the Student Member rate of $75 and includes 50 full-text papers. The SPIE Digital Library features over 100,000 full-text papers from SPIE Proceedings and Journals published since 1990. You can use Chapter funds or an outside source to pay for the subscription.
