Welcome New SPIE Student Chapters!
Five new student chapters were approved at the Board of Directors meeting in October in Dayton, Ohio. These new chapters join the steadily increasing population of optics students in Mexico, China, and the United States, bringing the total number of student chapters to 91.

New Funding for Student Organized Conferences
New in 2007, SPIE Student Services will be awarding Collaborative Conference Grants (CCG) to student chapters. This funding is designed to facilitate collaboration and networking between chapters at a conference, while providing the resources needed to create a significant student professional development event.

Student Service Award Established
The Service Award joins the award for Best Student Chapter Website as an honor that is only available to Student Members of the Society.
WUT Chapter Brings Optics to All Ages

Change to U.S. Visa Policy Helps Scholars
"Implementation of a five-year visa for scholars is a step in the right direction, but we need to continue to push for a visa system that supports all legitimate scientific exchange," said Krisinda Plenkovich, SPIE Director of Membership & Education Services. "The Department of State has listened to the recommendations put forward by the scientific and academic communities, and we urge them to continue working to restore the U.S. image as a welcoming nation."

The 2007 Optics Education Directory is available on-line in a fully searchable format, in addition to being a print publication.
