2006 Scholarship & Grant Winners Announced
This year, SPIE has awarded more than a quarter million dollars in scholarship and grant money to both individual students and institutions involved in optics and photonics research around the world. Congratulations to the winners!


Welcome New SPIE Student Chapters!
Eleven new Student Chapters were approved at the Photonics Europe conference in early April. Many representatives of this bumper crop of Student Chapters will join veteran Student Chapter leaders at the SPIE Student Leadership Workshop at Optics & Photonics this August.

Student Members Take Honors in Innovation Village
Members of the Warsaw University of Technology Student Chapter won SPIE Europe's Best Marketability prize (€500) for the project "Virtual Studio for educational content production."

The prize for Best Application (€500) for a solution to a critical problem went to the Bio-Sensing group from Vrije Universiteit Brussel for the project "Monitoring the stress build-up during the curing process of adhesives." Vrije Universiteit is also home to a new Student Chapter.


Congressional Visits Day Reps Make Case for Funding, Development
Duke University Student Chapter president Scott McCain represented his North Carolina district and the interests of optics researchers throughout the USA for better federal research funding at the 11th Annual Congressional Visits Day.

Funding and Career Development


Winter College Topic Announced
The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics will host its Winter College on Fiber Optics, Fiber Lasers and Applications over two weeks in February 2007. Current plans include a week-long preparatory school and experimental/demonstration sessions at the Laser Lab. The Center's mission is to foster advanced studies and research, especially in developing countries.
