Student Spotlight
There are many talented students at the undergraduate and graduate levels involved with SPIE. This month, however, oemagazine spotlights three high school students who stand out among their peers with their grounded nature and science savvy.

Lakhtakia named Distinguished Professor at Penn State
SPIE Member Akhlesh Lakhtakia has been named a Distinguished Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State. This special honor recognizes an elite group of Penn State professors for their exceptional teaching, research, creativity, and service to the University community.

Student Chapter Updates


Student Chapter Leaders at the SPIE 49th Annual Meeting
2-6 August 2004
Colorado Convention Center
Denver, Colorado USA

We have received applications for the Student Chapter Travel Grant from 30 Student Chapters. Many chapters will send more than one student and the projected attendance at Student Chapter specific events is well over 60 students. We are already planning a week of activities to compliment the Annual Meeting.

St. Petersburg State University of Informational Technologies
The St. Petersburg Chapter is arranging a meeting of SPIE Student Chapters in the area. Information about the two previous meetings can be found on the web at http://ysa.ifmo.ru/spie/meetings.html. They are inviting SPIE Student Chapter Officers to visit their beautiful city and take part in the Congress in October 2004. The Meeting will be held in conjunction with the III International Optical Congress.

Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University
This Chapter helped organize the 4th International Young Scientists Conference -"Problems of Optics and High Technology Material Science". Over 175 reports were presented at the Conference, representing the work of scientists from Belarus, Ireland, Russia, the UK, and the USA. The 5th conference will be held 28-31 October 2004.
