2nd Symposium of Applied Optics, Sustainability and Energy (SOASE)

2nd Symposium of Applied Optics, Sustainability and Energy

Submitted by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León SPIE student chapter

The academic group "Telecommunications and Photonics" and the SPIE & OSA student chapters at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), headed by PhD Romeo Selvas organized the 2nd Symposium of Applied Optics, Sustainability and Energy (SOASE) and the 6th University Meeting of Photonics and Optics (RUFO) with the idea of strengthening the collaboration between universities and research centers in Mexico.

The SOASE 2013 was held 24-26 April in the facilities of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. The event consisted of 3 workshops, 8 invited talks on optics and photonics, 4 invited talks on energy and sustainability, a poster session, SPIE/OSA student chapter networking events, an IONS orgainizing committee meeting, as well as a lunch with the experts and social and cultural events.

The SOASE and RUFO 2013, which was attended by over 180 people had a national impact through the participation of different universities and research centers such as, Universidad de Guanajuato (UGto), Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica (CIO), Universidad de Guadalajara (UDG), Instituto Nacional de Astrofíca, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE), Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE), Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), and Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ).

One of the main goals of the SOASE and RUFO was to involve the national student chapters. With that in mind the UANL awarded 14 grants to student chapter officers. During the event each chapter officer presented their research during a poster session, explained activities of their local chapter and actively participated on the IONS organization board. The organization board was very important in order for the chapter officers to have the opportunity to continue planning the first IONS-NA 6 Mexico, which will be held in Ensenada September, 2013.

The Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León and the student chapters are planning to repeat SOASE in the coming years.
