On Monday the 1st of August, student attendees to Optics and Photonics 2005 took advantage of the opportunity to have an informal talk over lunch with Nobel Laureate Nicolas Bloembergen, Prof. Emil Wolf, plenary speakers from the nanotechnology session, and other academic and industry experts. Within a relaxed atmosphere, students asked questions regarding their career paths, got eye-witness perspectives on milestones in the history of optics, and even discussed the particulars of some of the experts' textbooks. David Woolf, past president of the UC Davis Student Chapter said: "I find it remarkable that we can actually have a face-to-face talk with Prof. Wolf. He is a very talkative person and willing to share his expertise and give advice."
Brigitte Wex, from Bowling Green State University said: "I think this lunch is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to approach top researchers in a close and friendly way. There is no feeling of a barrier between students and an outstanding character; on the contrary, we feel motivated to interact with them as the informality of the occasion makes this interaction easier". After the meeting, numerous student attendees commented on how positive an experience it was to share lunch with experts in their same fields of research.
