Student Chapter Leadership Workshop

Another successful Student Chapter Leadership Workshop was held last month in San Diego, CA. The 11th annual workshop at SPIE's Optics + Photonics conference had a total of 159 student chapter members plus 17 trained facilitators from 31 different countries. The facilitators were a huge success, allowing students to work together in small groups, network, and connect with other chapter leaders.

The topic this year was personality types and back by popular demand was facilitator Dr. Sherry Norravi. Students had the opportunity to take an abbreviated version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment, which allowed them to gain insight into their own personalities. Student leadership workshop alumni and Early Career Professionals who acted as facilitators were then able to lead group exercises in order to further understand the different types of personalities and how to effectively work with others.

"Having facilitators is an excellent way for student members to get involved and also enabled smaller group discussion to take place with structure and direction." - SCLW participant

The workshop continued on Sunday with a professional development workshop series from professionals, Michael Larson, Craig Hoffman, and Stephen Pompea. The rest of the week held other popular student events such as, the Optics Outreach Olympics, Student Lunch with the Experts, Getting Hired Panel and the Speed Networking Social.
