Keeping Nanotech Safe

Resources and extras about nanotechnology safety.

Reports Available from ICON Workshops

More than 70 experts from academia, industry, government organizations, and nongovernmental organizations representing the United States, Europe, and Asia participated in two workshops to discuss the need for creating predictive models for the safe use of nanoparticles. 

The International Council on Nanotechnology (ICON, based at Rice University) organized and sponsored the workshops because of the growing commercialization of nanotechnology applications and the lack of adequate research into the safety of the relatively new science. The objective of the workshops was to outline the research steps needed to provide predictive models within the next 10 years.

Such a plan may be useful to policymakers, researchers, and technology developers who seek to direct limited resources to addressing the most pressing questions in nano safety.

Europeans Promote Safety Code for Nanotechnology

The European Commission is promoting safe and responsible nanoscience research by establishing a Code of Conduct to govern the field of nanoscience and nanotechnologies. The voluntary Code seeks to make researchers accountable to the public for the economic, social, human, and environmental impacts of their research on nanoparticles, which frequently differ significantly from those at a larger scale. Analysts expect nanotechnology markets to increase by hundreds of billions of euros over the next 10 years.

Nanophotonics Journal

image of the Journal of NanophotonicsThe Journal of Nanophotonics is an online-only, peer-reviewed journal focusing on the fabrication and application of nanostructures that either generate or manipulate light from the infrared to the ultraviolet regimes.

This e-journal features the latest in peer-reviewed nanophotonics research; multimedia (video and audio) content; color images; rapid, article-at-a-time publication; and reference linking via CrossRef. In addition to contributed research papers, JNP occasionally includes special sections in key areas of technology. Special sections are assembled by guest editors.

Free Nanotech Posters from SPIE:
