SPIE Launches Two New E-Journals

Remote sensing and nanophotonics now have their own multimedia e-journals.
SPIE is launching two online-exclusive journals this month: the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing (JARS) and the Journal of Nanophotonics (JNP).
The new e-journals use an online peer-review system and article-at-a-time publishing to enable rapid publication, meaning papers will appear online nearly immediately after final acceptance. In addition, the journals are published as part of the SPIE Digital Library, so all papers will be instantly searchable and downloadable with a Digital Library subscription. The new journals can be chosen as part of your membership benefit or subscribed to individually (see sidebar).
The e-journal format also provides a number of advantages other than publication speed. For example, these are the first SPIE journals to include multimedia content such as video and audio clips.
"The new journals have been created to serve two very important communities within SPIE?remote sensing and nanophotonics," says Eric Pepper, SPIE director of publications. "The decision to publish these as e-journals was driven by the exciting capabilities of online publishing, especially multimedia content, high-resolution color images, CrossRef links, searchability, and timely publication."
Here's a closer look at the content of each of the journals.
Journal of Applied Remote Sensing
JARS focuses on important new remote sensing technologies and applications. Topics covered in the journal include:
  • remote sensing data acquisition and processing, communication, system integration, target selection, product applications, measurement characterization, calibration, information analysis, mining, and management;
  • remote sensing applications in the atmosphere, oceans, ecosystems, climate, agriculture, land cover/change, space, solar, ice/snow, hazard, fire, pollution, hydrology, and other environmental areas and their related information management, dissemination, and decision making;
  • satellite mission requirements and implementation, as well as identification of key satellite remote sensing validation problems/issues and development of methods for solving these issues, satellite mission requirements and implementation;
  • space technology and remote sensing sensor technology development, technology transfer, and new orbital measurement concepts; and
  • program and experiment concepts, planning, and implementation leading to the optimal utilization of remote sensing data.
The editor in chief of JARS is SPIE Fellow Wei Gao, research scientist in the USDA UV-B Monitoring and Research Program, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO).
Journal of Nanophotonics
JNP will focus on the fabrication and application of nanostructures that facilitate the generation, propagation, manipulation, and detection of light from the infrared to the ultraviolet regimes.
Topics within the scope of the journal include the theory, modeling and simulation, experimentation, instrumentation, and application of:
  • nanoparticles and nanoparticulate composite materials;
  • quantum dots and other low-dimensional nanostructures;
  • nanotubes, nanowires, and nanofibers;
  • nanowaveguides and nanoantennas;
  • sculptured thin films and nanostructured photonic crystals;
  • quantum optics and spintronics;
  • surface plasmons and nanoplasmonics;
  • ultrashort pulse propagation;
  • light-harvesting materials and devices;
  • near-field optics, optical manipulation techniques, and scattering techniques;
  • molecular self-assembly, and other nanofabrication techniques;
  • nanobiophotonics; and
  • nanophotonic concepts and systems that facilitate continued integration of various optical and/or electronic functions.
Akhlesh Lakhtakia, SPIE Fellow, is the editor in chief for JNP. Lakhtakia is a distinguished professor of engineering science and mechanics at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) and a visiting (adjunct) professor of physics (2004-2007) at Imperial College, London.
