New Editor

SPIE member Karen O. Egiazarian, a video- and image-processing expert from Tampere University of Technology (TUT) in Finland is the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). He succeeds Gaurav Sharma, a professor at University of Rochester (USA), who has served as editor-in-chief since January 2011.

Egiazarian is a professor in the Department of Signal Processing at TUT, leading the computational imaging group, and has published more than 600 papers. He has also authored and coauthored four books and is a cofounder and CEO of Noiseless Imaging, a TUT spinoff company.

The Journal of Electronic Imaging, copublished by SPIE and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), publishes papers in all technology areas that make up the field of electronic imaging including technologies involved in the design, engineering, and applications of electronic imaging systems.

Craig Olson, SPIE Publications Committee chair, noted that in addition to being a recognized expert in video and image processing, Egiazarian has contributed significantly to SPIE and the electronic imaging community as a conference organizer, presider, and author. “I think his close ties to both conferences and publications will prove greatly beneficial in steering JEI into its next phase,” Olson said.

Susan Farnand, IS&T Publications vice president, said IS&T was “extremely pleased that Dr. Egiazarian will assume the role of editor-in-chief of JEI. We believe that his years of experience in electronic imaging research and education — along with his contribution to JEI as an associate editor — prepare him well to lead a publication that is such a key resource for the electronic imaging community.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Sharma for his dedication and skilled leadership,” Farnand said.

Egiazarian, who was an associate editor of the journal since 2000, said he was honored to serve as its editor-in-chief. He took over from Sharma 1 January.

“I’m convinced that we can further increase the prestige of JEI, achieving top scientific recognition and boosting the Science Citation Index ranking of the journal,” Egiazarian said.

Egiazarian has an MSc in mathematics from Yerevan State University (Armenia); a PhD in physics and mathematics from Moscow State University (Russia); and a DTech from TUT.
