Gender equity in the workplace

The SPIE Women in Optics Gender Equity Task Force has released a report on gender equity issues in the optics and photonics community.

The report, “Women in the Optics and Photonics Workplace,” summarizes data gathered in the 2016 SPIE global salary survey and describes median pay and other workplace characteristics affecting women in the field.

The task force was formed to identify how the professional environment and culture of the community can better enable equal opportunities, rewards, and recognition for its members, independent of gender.

Disparities in salaries, parental leave, and representation in optics and photonics are among the key findings of the report.

For instance, the SPIE survey found that women's salaries in the UK, Spain, and Italy are closest to matching men's salaries (wage gap) than their counterparts elsewhere. The survey also shows that women in higher-income European countries take longer parental leaves from their jobs than their female colleagues elsewhere.
