Multimodal cueing and short-term pilot interaction during helicopter low-level operation under automatic trajectory following

Low-Level Forward Air Medical Evacuation missions are common for military operations. Today, these missions are carried out in manual flight, but future systems will most likely allow fully coupled automatic flight with trajectory following control for this regime. Within the project “US-German Advanced Technologies for Rotorcraft Project Agreement” a multimodal cueing system with tactile, auditive, and visual components was developed. On the one hand, this allows testing of human-machine interaction concepts for this type of mission and on the other hand further develops the automation to demonstrate its feasibility. The paper describes the multimodal approach, explains the test environment and presents the evaluation results.
