Senior Engineer

Joel Kubby
Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California at Santa Cruz, USA

How do you spend a typical day?
My typical day consists of time in the classroom and time in the lab. I also spend time preparing lectures, grading homework, meeting with students and writing grant proposals.

What do you love about your job?
I enjoy having the freedom to pursue my intellectual interests, or at least the ones I can get funded, and working with students.

What have you learned through experience that you wish you had known before starting your career in optics?
I wish I had known how important manufacturability and supply chain are for creating a new product. While you can often come up with great technology demonstrations in the lab, they will not go anywhere in the marketplace unless they are manufacturable and you have a supply chain for delivering them.
