SPIE President H. Philip Stahl visited several sites in the UK earlier this month, getting a close-up look at research in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, optical vortex metrology, sensor development, astronomy, and European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) projects.

In Edinburgh, he gave a talk on optical metrology for the SPIE Heriot-Watt University Student Chapter and toured research labs. He also toured the UK Astronomy Technology Centre research labs with SPIE Fellow and host Colin Cunningham, and visited the Crawford Collection of historic astronomical books and instruments at the Royal Observatory. Stahl also visited optics and photonics companies in St. Asaph, Leicester, and Oxford.

At Imperial College London, Stahl, a senior optical physicist at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (US), presented a seminar on the James Webb Space Telescope for faculty and students and met with the newly knighted Sir Thomas W. B. Kibble, emeritus professor, and other optics leaders.

Stahl also paid visits to Glyndẃr University, Cranfield University, and Qioptiq.
