Rochester's Pedro Vallejo Ramirez, Alexander Anderson receive engineering honor society  scholarships

SPIE Student Chapter Member Alexander Anderson and Pedro Vallejo Ramirez of the University of Rochester have been awarded Tau Beta Pi scholarships.

Of the 261 recipients of Tau Beta PI scholarships, Ramirez and Anderson were the only students awarded in the field of optics. All Tau Beta Pi Scholarships are awarded on the competitive criteria of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. Tau Beta Pi scholarships are named after affiliated members or corporations.

Ramirez is pursuing a degree in optical sciences and engineering and has contributed his services to global outreach, university’s campus, community, and science advocacy. He was awarded the Stabile Scholarship, which is named after Vincent A. Stabile, whose gifts to the association, along with gifts from the Vincent A. Stabile Foundation, have permanently endowed scholarships.

Anderson is also pursuing a degree in optical sciences and engineering and is currently an Optics Intern at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He was awarded the Record Scholarship, which was awarded for the first time in 2001 and commemorates Leroy E. Record, whose bequest will provide earnings to support awards in perpetuity.

Tau Beta Pi is the Engineering Honor Society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885. It has collegiate chapters at 244 engineering colleges in the United States and active alumni chapters in 41 cities. It is the world’s largest engineering society with more than 564,000 members in its 130-year history.
