SPIE President Maryellen Giger receives the 2019 iCON Innovator Award from the iBIO
SPIE Fellow and current President Maryellen Giger, A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago, is this year’s recipient of the iCON Innovator Award from the Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization (iBIO). Giger received the award during the iBIO Institute’s 12th Annual iCON Awards Dinner on 2 October at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
The iCON Innovator Award is given annually to an active researcher or scientist within the ranks of life sciences education who is acknowledged by his or her peers as a leader in the contemporary teaching of, and scholarship in, biotechnology and its related sciences. The recipient also demonstrates leadership potential at the frontier of knowledge in the life sciences and conducts research that may enhance economic development in the State of Illinois.
According to their statement, the iBIO recognized Giger because she is considered to be one of the pioneers in the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD). She has authored or co-authored more than 220 peer-reviewed journal articles, is an inventor on over 35 US patents, and serves as a reviewer for various national and international granting agencies including the National Institute of Health and the US Army.
In addition to serving as our current President of the Society, Giger has served on several committees that help shape the direction of the organization, including the Executive Committee, Publications Committee, and Strategic Planning Committee. She served on the SPIE Board of Directors from 2012 to 2014 and is the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the SPIE Journal of Medical Imaging. Her conference involvement has been continuous since first attending SPIE Medical Imaging in the 1980s. She is the founding chair of the program committee for the Computer-Aided Diagnosis Conference at that event, and has participated in presentations, courses, and workshops and served as conference program and symposium chairs for other events as well. For her tireless contributions to SPIE and the optics and photonics community, she was elected to SPIE Fellow in 2014.
