SPIE CEO is featured speaker at OPTIC 2016 in Taiwan 03 January 2017
The National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) hosted OPTIC 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan, 3-5 December 2016. The event is Taiwan’s largest annual international conference on optics and photonics and includes the annual meeting of the Taiwan Photonics Society (TPS). SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs, who served on the International Advisory Committee for the conference, was honored with an invitation from the TPS to deliver the opening remarks for the conference. In his talk, Photonics Applications: The Growth Continues, Arthurs discussed the impact of the 2015 International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015), of which SPIE was a Founding Partner. He highlighted the success of IYL2015 in helping the world realize the importance of advancing photonics for uses in computing power, information transmission, and miniaturization of electronic and photonic-enabled devices and their components. Arthurs also emphasized the vital roles photonics will play in a future technology revolution called Industry 4.0. The growth of photonics and photonic applications will require increased partnerships between science, engineering, and industrial communities around the world, he said. Plenary speakers at the event included SPIE Fellow Alan Willner of University of Southern California, the 2016 president of OSA; Yasuhiko Arakawa of University of Tokyo (Japan), the current president of the International Commission for Optics; Der-Ray Huang of National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan); and Dominic O’Brien of University of Oxford (UK). During the conference, Arthurs met with many members of the international optics and photonics community, including SPIE Fellows Din-Ping Tsai of Academia Sinica, the outgoing president of the TPS, and Gong-Ru “Jonathan” Lin of National Taiwan University, who was inaugurated as the new TPS president.
