    SPIE Fellow Shen-En Qian won the prestigious Canadian government national award "Public Service Award of Excellence"

    photo of Shen-En Qian SPIE Fellow Shen-En Qian Senior Scientist of the Canadian Space Agency, received the prestigious Canadian Government Public Service Award of Excellence on 20 October 2016 in Ottawa from David Johnston, His Excellency, the Governor General of Canada. Out of 33 awards in 14 different categories, Dr. Qian was the only recipient recognized for scientific contributions.

    "The Public Service Award of Excellence recognizes the outstanding contributions of public servants who have demonstrated qualities of leadership, innovation, and commitment to excellence. This year’s award recipients provided exceptional service to the public across Canada and around the world…” said Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau while expressing his gratitude to the recipients. “…I am reminded of the hope, energy, and ambition that helped build our great country. This year’s recipients personify those values, and I am delighted to honor them on behalf of all Canadians."

    Specializing in spacecraft optical payloads, deep space exploration, satellite signal processing, and many other areas of study, Dr. Qian has nine inventions to his name, which have resulted in 26 patents worldwide and provided cost-reducing solutions to many challenges faced by developing Canadian optical space missions.

    In collaboration with NASA experts and the European Space Sector, Dr. Qian also developed three international standards for spacecraft data systems. These standards have benefited over fifty space missions to date.

    Qian has been internationally recognized for over 100 publications. He is the sole author of two reference books on satellite signal processing, the co-author of four other books, and a contributing editor. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing and has served as conference chair and a conference committee member for SPIE events.

    An adjunct professor at York University (Ontario), Dr. Qian is also a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) and a Senior Member of IEEE.
