Martin Richardson awarded Jefferson Fellowship

Martin Richardson

SPIE Fellow Martin C. Richardson, professor at the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida and Director of the Townes Laser Institute, has been awarded a Jefferson Fellowship at the U.S. State Department and will be directly involved with international policy development and implementation.

The Jefferson Fellowship lasts for a year starting in mid-August, and its recipient is selected by the National Academy of Sciences. Professor Richardson was chosen for his work on the National Photonics Initiative, the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation, and the inclusion of new laser technology applications in the International Year of Light 2015.

Richardson is Pegasus Professor and University Trustee Chair, as well as Northrop Grumman Professor of X-ray Photonics and Professor of Optics.

A graduate of Imperial College and London University, Richardson has more than 100 SPIE publications covering advances in laser technology and resonant optical devices and their applications in dozens of industries.

He has served on the organizing committee for the SPIE Photonics West conference on Solid State Lasers, and was awarded the SPIE Harold E. Edgerton Award in 2013.
