SPIE Corporate Members win R&D 100 awards 02 August 2013
The editors of R&D Magazine recently announced the winners of the 51st annual R&D 100 Awards, which recognize the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. The technologies this year include an electron microscope capable of recording movies from the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, a device that harnesses power from viruses, a robotic glove, and an underwater vehicle that can operate both with and without a human crew. Two of this year's recipients of the Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation, TAG Optics and Princeton Instruments, were included among the R&D magazine award recipients. The Prism Awards are sponsored by SPIE and Photonics Media and presented each year at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco. SPIE Corporate Members who developed products on the 2013 R&D 100 list are:
Along with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Renewable Energy Lab, federal institutions such as those at Los Alamos, Sandia, Oak Ridge, Argonne, Lawrence Livermore, and Lawrence Berkeley received awards for a variety of projects using optics and photonics technologies. The top 100 technologies are split between private industry, academia, and publicly funded or nonprofit research institutions. This year's awards also highlight the power of collaboration. Winning technologies developed by teams of two or more cooperating organizations earned 42 of this year's awards. Winners will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet 7 November.

Photonics instruments, systems, and devices are well-represented in the 2013 R&D 100 Awards, with the inclusion of nine SPIE Corporate Members and numerous U.S. national labs and companies that frequently exhibit at SPIE events among the winners.
