The symposium was organized in conjunction with the International Fair of Optoelectronics and Photonics (OPTONexpo). It was the third PSP symposium since the SPIE Poland Chapter was officially transformed into the PSP in 2008.

The award is named for Professor Maksymilian Pluta, the founder and long-time chair of the former SPIE Chapter, who died in 2002.

PSP launched the Photonics Letters of Poland in cooperation with SPIE in 2009. The journal covers topics in optics, optoelectronics, and photonics in the areas of fundamental and applied research, physics and technical, materials, components, devices, circuits, systems, technology, design, construction, manufacturing, and metrology.

Dr. Arthurs; SPIE President Toyohiko Yatagai; SPIE Member John Dudley, chair of the International Year of Light (IYL) steering committee; and SPIE Fellow Francesco Baldini, Istituto di Fisica Applicata Nello Carrara, were among the invited speakers.

During the symposium, Professor Yatagai presented SPIE Best Paper Awards to Paulina Pura-Pawlikowska of the Military University of Technology Warsaw, Izabela Ducin of Warsaw University of Technology, and SPIE Student Member Maciej Kraszewski from Gdansk University of Technology.

Yatagai (at right, below) was honored along with OSA President Philip Russell by Dudley (at left) for SPIE contributions in making the January International Year of Light (IYL2015) opening ceremonies in Paris a success. SPIE is one of 12 founding partners of IYL2015.
